Grids and Threads

The series Grids and Threads consists of a typology of eighty 16x20 inches works on paper. It is a continuous variation of the concept of a grid that measures 8x8 inches, which is divided through punctured holes into one square inch spaces. The different variations of this typology plays with the absolute freedom and constraint of a given parameter. Whatever happens inside the grid is considered freedom. The grid itself stays the same and is considered the restraint. All that is used for this art process are humble materials, such as string and paper. The drawing and sewing with strings creates a minimalist rhythm of shadows and light. The square grid in white is a quiet reflection on the concept of a minimal space, that’s centered. The idea of creating a series of never ending variation is related to the search of Agnes Martina and Robert Ryman. A monograph entitled Grids and Threads was published by Jovis in 2018 with a text by Jacoba Urist and an interview with Parrish Art Museum director Terrie Sultan. Grids and Threads was exhibited at the Parrish Art Museum and the Watermill Center in Watermill, New York.
